Spice Bush is a fairly common large shrub
(sometimes a small tree) that is found along stream sides and bottomlands
with very aromatic leaves. The pale flower buds are distinctively
ball-shaped.

This wonderful,
broad, rounded, multi-stemmed shrub is covered with fragrant yellow flowers
in early May that open before the leaves emerge and are held close to the
branches. Birds will feed on the brilliant red fruits in late summer.
