An underused tree that makes an excellent urban, street tree because of its full, dense canopy and little maintenance requirements. A prolonged drought may cause dieback and can be remedied by occasional irrigation.

An attractive, columnar tree; dense branches when young, spreading into a broad cone shape with age.  Clean looking dark green foliage turns yellow-orange in fall.  Excellent for use as a tall formal hedge or singular specimen tree.  Heat and drought tolerant.

CARPINUS betula 'Frans Fontaine'

Frans Fontaine Hornbeam

Height: 0-35'  Width: 15-18' Zone: 4
This Hornbeam is narrow and stays narrow unlike the cultivar Fastigiata which is very narrow in youth but gets very wide with age.  Nice green foliage throughout the season looks super, fall color is yellow.
