Some Facts about Shovel Construction

Blade Lift is the vertical distance between the tip of the handle and ground level when the blade is resting flat on its back.  Blade lift varies from tool to tool according to its specific task.

Hollow Back shovels are made from a single piece of heat treated steel, producing a lighter weight shovel.
Closed Back shovels are constructed from one piece 16 gauge tempered steel with a seam welded pad over the back of the blade eliminating mud and dirt build-up on the shovel.
Solid Shank design puts more metal in critical shank area for greater strength.

Shovel - Spade - Scoop Patterns

Round Point
Used for digging. Blade is pointed and its edges are beveled for cutting through sod, compacted soil and roots.
  Square Point
Used for transferring heavy, loose material. Dished design mounds material on blade for increased efficiency.
Garden/Nursery Spade
Used for turning soil, transplanting and lawn edging. Blade is narrow and beveled for easy soil penetration.
  Drain/Transplanting Spade
Used for digging and cleaning drainage and irrigation ditches. Also great for transplanting. Narrow blade forms a round bottom ditch, ideal for drain tiles and pipes.
Aluminum Scoop
Used for transferring lightweight, bulky material. Also widely used in food processing plants. Blade is strong, rust-free and durable a favorite among farmers and grain products.
  Poly Scoop
Used for transferring lightweight, bulky material, e.g., grain, snow, refuse. Extra large capacity blade increases efficiency. Great for shoveling snow.
